Professor, Founding Dean of the School of Innovation and Design, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech).
He was elected Fellow of the Association for Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA) and Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in 2005, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) in 2021.
He has served as Vice-Principal (Campus and International Development) and Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning at the University of Melbourne; Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Sydney; and Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Hong Kong.
During his tenure at the University of Melbourne, he founded the Melbourne School of Design and launched multiple large-scale interdisciplinary research projects.
He holds or has held honorary and advisory positions at the University of Melbourne, Eindhoven University of Technology, Wuhan University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Singapore University of Technology and Design, and the University of New South Wales.
Professor Guan is internationally renowned for his pioneering research in design, design learning, digital environments, design management and virtual heritage.
He is Co-Founding Director of LEaRN (Learning Environments Applied Research Network), which delivers multidisciplinary research on learning and architecture.
He is also Founding Director of AURIN (Australian Urban Research Infrastructure Network), which developed a national digital urban data infrastructure to support research and decision-making. Both networks are hosted by the University of Melbourne.
He has published more than 200 papers in academic, professional and public media, and serves on the editorial boards of authoritative journals.
Professor Guan earned his PhD in Architecture from The Open University, Master of Architecture with Computer Applications from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), as well as his Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees from the University of Cambridge.
